Yoga on the beach not only sounds idyllic and makes you feel like you’re on vacation, but it has been shown to improve your physical and mental well-being, which seems like reason enough to take the classes! Taking your practice to the beach can help you challenge yourself, protect your body, connect with nature and feel better about life.
Here are the top six reasons why you should practice yoga at the beach
1. Deepen your relaxation
Exercising outdoors can have a very positive effect on the nervous system. The sensory impressions of the sounds of the ocean, the soothing sea breeze and the gentle chirping of some birds can help you relax and deepen your postures, such as the baby pose or the warrior pose. In addition, the sea breeze helps you cool down after an energetic session.
2. Connect with nature
It is important to commune with nature. Sometimes we forget about it because we would rather be curled up under a blanket in front of the TV than next to a good strong tree in the forest. The feel of grass underfoot, sand in our toes, and fresh air on our skin brings us back to our evolutionary roots and can help us feel grounded in the practice of yoga. Exercising outdoors improves our well-being and makes us feel much more positive!
3. Sea air
Breathing the sea air has many health benefits that are specially enhanced with yoga. Your body can absorb oxygen more easily thanks to the negative ions that are present in the sea air. These negative ions can help you increase serotonin levels naturally, which can help you feel more relaxed and happy. Salt also has antibacterial properties. This means it will help you recover faster from any infections or bacteria you’ve picked up.
4. Vitamin D
Any exercise you do outdoors will give you a great boost of vitamin D, even on a cloudy day. Vitamin D is essential for the regulation of calcium and phosphate in the body. To feel happy and healthy, you need plenty of this vitamin. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D can help maintain healthy bones and muscles, which is an important part of any yogi’s routine.
5. Support in the sand
While staying in the sand can be challenging for your practice, you’ll get the relaxing benefit of having a cushion of soft support underneath you as well. It will also help you support your hips and glutes. You can try some of the more challenging beach poses, as you won’t have to worry about falling to a hard wooden floor if you fail at any of them.
6. Get out of your comfort zone.
By practicing yoga in a new environment, you begin to learn things about your practice that you hadn’t noticed before. You may notice that your body reacts to the posture differently, or you may feel completely different in a posture you normally love or hate. Stepping out of your comfort zone can help you see the world (and the practice of yoga) through different eyes.
